Near North Voices: Nipissing University's Community Choir
begins it's 5th season in September, 2011
Near North Voices was established at the beginning of the 2007-8 academic year as an advanced choir on the Nipissing University campus, to provide an opportunity to make music in an informal, collegial atmosphere in a community of varied and interesting, artistically minded and musically passionate people. Under the direction of Artistic Director Dr. Adam Adler, who is also Assistant Professor of Music Education at Nipissing University, the choir has grown from a founding group of 17 singers to 50 singers at the end of its third season. The highlight of the choir’s third season was the Northern Ontario premiere of Richard Einhorn’s Voices of Light for choir, orchestra, soloists and silent film, as part of the week-long VOICES festival. The ensemble looks forward to a new season of musical exploration, education, and innovation.
Near North Voices is open to students, faculty, and staff at Nipissing University and Canadore College, as well as to members of the North Bay community. Adults and high school students are welcome.
Students at Nipissing University can use Near North Voices
for the ensemble component of the Applied Music course (MUSC 1420/2420/3420).
No audition is required; previous choral experience and some music reading ability are helpful.
The requested membership fee for 2011-12 is $60. A $20 refundable music deposit is also required each semester.
Near North Voices rehearses Wednesday evenings, 7:00 p.m.- 9:15 p.m. in "The Music Room"/F212 at Nipissing University, 100 College Drive, North Bay. Enter through the main front Nipissing U. doors; turn immediately left and left again, past the donors' wall and down the hallway.
The first rehearsal of the season will be Wednesday, September 14th, 2011.
