From 1998 to 2005, Dr. Thompson lived in the former Soviet Union, teaching for the Civic Education Project (CEP) in state and private universities in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, and later working for the Aga Khan Humanities Project (AKHP), managing a multi-country humanities curriculum and faculty development project headquartered in Tajikistan. Since leaving Central Asia in 2005, he has remained active in regional faculty and student development projects. He has published in Central Asian Survey and the Central Eurasian Studies Review, and has a forthcoming article in Education, Citizenship and Social Justice. He currently has a Research Outcomes Award from Nipissing University for a project on urban spaces and citizenship. Other research interests include imperialism and the disciplinary construction of post-socialism and Islam, research, and modernity within Central Asia.
