This course examines nursing pharmacotherapeutics related to body systems. Students will learn drug classifications and how they relate to human disease. The usual dosage, mechanisms of action, contraindications, side effects, and the implications of specific medications will be reviewed. The students will practice specialized pharmacological calculations.
Goals of the Course:
The goal of this course is to help students to understand the knowledge required to give medications safely.
Course Learning Outcomes:
- Identify and explain principles of pharmacology.
- Explore legal and ethical aspects of medication administration.
- Describe the biopsychosocial issues around pharmacology.
- Identify the drug classification systems.
- Explore the effects of drugs on body systems.
- Explain the common mechanisms of action, indications, contraindications and nursing implications of specific drugs within each classification.
- Perform specialized medication calculations.
Course Format: lecture/discussion
Course Expectations:
- Students are self-directed learners, who will seek guidance when needed, prepare for class by completing all required readings and by participating in class discussion.
- Students will submit all the required assignment(s) before or on the specified date(s). Late submission without the professor's consent will result in a deduction of 5% of the assignment grade per business day. A zero will be given after 5 days.
- Students will write tests and final exams as scheduled. Students missing tests without informing the professor prior to the test or without a valid reason will not be permitted to write the tests at a later date and will receive a zero for the missed test.
- There are no supplemental assignments, tests, or exams in this course.
- Anyone demonstrating dishonesty, cheating or plagiarism in relation to any aspect of this course will receive an F grade.
- Students of the Collaborative Nipissing/Canadore Nursing Program are required to demonstrate behaviours consistent with the Standards of Nursing Practice for Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses in Ontario and the Guidelines for Ethical Behaviour in Nursing of the College of Nurses of Ontario . Failure of any student to conform to the principles of these documents may result in dismissal from the collaborative nursing program.

- Final Exam (TBA in examination period) 40%
Students must attain a minimum of 60% in order to be successful in this course.
