Education in the Junior Division (Grades 4-6) Additional Basic Qualification (EDUC 4615)
Course Description:
This 4-week course will cover the following content: influences of philosophical, psychological and sociological foundations; curriculum expectations guidelines established by the Ontario Ministry of Education; curriculum development in each of the major areas of the Primary/Junior Division programs; media, print and digital resources particular to each curriculum area; and, instructional strategies and techniques. A one-week practicum in an elementary school will allow candidates to observe the realities (successes and challenges) of classroom teaching and learning in the Primary/Junior Divisions.
Course Learning Expectations:
The Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession and the Ethical Standards for the Teaching Profession have been embedded in the following learning expectations:
- Analyze, interpret, and implement the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum expectations and Ministry and district school board policies and guidelines related to the Primary/Junior learner;
- Apply the theoretical understanding and foundation necessary to design, implement and assess programs for Primary/Junior level children;
- Model and modify expectations, strategies and assessment practices based on the developmental or special needs of the Primary/Junior learner;
- Describe and create learning environments conducive to the intellectual, social, emotional, physical, linguistic, cultural, spiritual and moral development of all Primary/Junior level children;
- Identify ways that a teacher can work collaboratively with in-school personnel, parents/guardians and the community;
- Access and explore a variety of resources, including technological resources, within and beyond the educational system to enhance professional knowledge in support of student learning;
- Refine professional practice through ongoing inquiry, dialogue, observations, and reflection related to the Primary/Junior Division;
- Support and model ethical practices;
- Understand the need to respect and conserve resources in the environment;
- Understand how to create and sustain professional learning communities (PLCs); and,
- Demonstrate the ability to integrate information and communicate technology into teaching practice.
