THE MASSASAUGA PROVINCIAL PARK
The Massasauga Provincial Park has been described as the "jewel in the crown’ of the Ontario Parks System. This island-studded paradise – measuring 21 km X 12 km – has rugged Group-of-Seven landscape, shipwrecks, uncharted waters, a ghost, and unusual species … including Canada’s only lizard, the five-lined skink. It also houses the last Canadian stronghold of the Massasauga Rattlesnake!
Nipissing University has had a special relationship with the park since 1994, when Dr. Eric Mattson and I made arrangements to commence the first Nipissing summer projects, and to hold the first Nipissing fall field camp (GEOG 4976), within the park. Since then – Nipissing and Massasauga personnel have cooperated on many summer projects and many fall field camps. Numerous Nipissing students have been educated and/or employed within the park.
