HIST 1407 Final Exam

The final exam consists of a single question that will require you to reflect upon the course, and develop your own personal concept of Canada's history from 1867 to the late twentieth century.

The grading scheme can be found here, but also pay attention to points at the bottom of this page.

Question

Throughout the month of June you have listened to a number of lectures and completed a number of readings. A common theme in all of these has been Canada's national development -- that is how it grew from a small country of four provinces linked to the British Empire to a country stretching from sea to sea to sea and a fully independent nation.

What were the most important steps that Canada took during the post-Confederation era to develop into this nation, and what sort of country did it create?  You may want to consider all or some of the following points as you write your answer:

Were all peoples treated equally during the post-Confederation era (or is this even important to consider)?
Was the breaking of the imperial tie with England beneficial or detrimental to Canada's development?
Has Canada ever really truly been a 'nation' when one considers the tension between the French and English (i.e.: has there ever been a national sense of being Canadian)?

These are merely suggestions that you may or may not want to include in your answer. The important thing is to think critically about Canada's development following 1867, what you think the most important developments were, and if the end product is something to be proud of.

You may pull upon lectures, your textbook, or the readings that you have done this year to develop your answer.

Grading Scheme

In addition to the rubric given to you in class some basic points should be kept in mind as you prepare and write your answer

Grammar, sentence structure, paragraph structure, and essay structure are part of your grade
Be aware of the need to provide detail in your answer. Simply saying "Pierre Trudeau was really important because he brought the constitution home" is not sufficient. Explain your points. Indicate to me that you understand your evidence, and can relate its significance to me.
Remember that this is an argumentative essay. Develop your argument and prove to me that you are right. Marshall your evidence, and make sure that what you offer as evidence relates to your argument.
