The acquisition of land was one of the most important activities families in Upper Canada engaged in. Not surprisingly, the record of these transactions in the form of deeds, sales and mortgages, were carefully kept. Although printed forms for many of these transactions existed, the details of the particular act had to be added by hand. Sometimes the whole document was hand written. Annotations were sometimes added on the side or the back of the document. The payments made on mortages, for example, were carefully recorded on the back of the deed as this receipt was essential to prove the payment was made if the question should ever arise.

The Cameron family papers include a number deeds and mortgages ranging from 1834 to 1882. They record the history of several family transactions and provide examples of several different types of land records.
