The National Indian Brotherhood (now Assembly of First Nations) presented Indian Control of Indian Education to then Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada Jean Chretien on December 21, 1972. Two months later, Chretien indicated his approval in principle of the document and committed DIAND to implementing it as federal policy.

(That's not exactly what happened . . . see Margaret S. Ward. 1986. Indian education: policy and politics 1972-1982. Canadian Journal of Native Education 13,2: 10-21.
