About Me

I am the child of maritime parents who "went down the road" to Saskatchewan when I was quite young. I spent my formative years in western Canada and received my BA in Sociology from the University of Regina.  My honours research was a critical assessment of higher education in Canada.  I pursued an MA in Sociology and Social Anthropology at Dalhousie University where I conducted research on women teaching in universities.  Having grown entirely depressed about my prospects as an academic woman, I turned my attention to studies of media and popular culture with a focus on gender and class.  My PhD dissertation is a study of class, gender and watching television which I successfully defended at McMaster University in the Fall of 2004.

In recent years I've been contract teaching at a variety of Canadian universities.  At Mount Allison University I took on the critical media, gender relations and theory courses in the Sociology Department.  At Acadia University I taught the core theory courses as well as courses on work.  At the University of New Brunswick at Saint John I taught courses on media, communications, popular culture and gender in the Social Sciences Department as well as some courses specifically for the Information & Communications Studies Program. During the 2004-05 academic year I taught in the Gender Equality and Social Justice Program here at Nipissing University. I taught for the Sociology, Social Welfare and Criminal Justice Dept. at Nipissing during 2005/06.  I have recently accepted a permanent position at the University of New Brunswick at Saint John in the Information & Communication Studies Program. I can be contacted at the coordinates listed above.
