Station 6

ACTIVITIES USING CANADA YEARBOOK 1997

*** 15-20 minutes

This exercise has a dual purpose:

  1. to work with an activity adapted from the Canada Yearbook 1997 Teachers’ Kit (#5: "Canada Yearbook 1997 on CD-ROM Scavenger Hunt: A CD-Rom") and
  2. to explore the search function of the program.
Materials:
bullet Copy of "The CD-Rom Instructions (page 41 using the Adobe Acrobat Reader program)."
bullet Copy of "CD-Rom collector’s Sheet (pages 42 & 43 using the Adobe Acrobat Reader program)."
Note: not all of the Teachers’ Kit instructions for this activity are directly applicable to the PC version of the program.

  1. With Canada Yearbook 1997 (CYB) operating, click on the Table of Contents and the Outline icons. Both windows will appear on screen.

  2. On your copy of the "CD-Rom Collector’s Sheet" in the Search Word column write in a six or seven letter word you might find on a Map of Canada. [To expedite this short exercise, your searches will use these letters to find information for each of the categories listed in the Search No. and Category column. For this exercise today try the word "Toronto".]

  3. The CYB has four main categories in The Library window: The Environment, The People, The Economy and The Nation. Place your cursor (or arrow / pointing device) over The Population in The People category. Now click on SEARCH in the top left corner of the screen and click again on Find.

  4. Now click on the down arrow immediately beside Word Wheel and click on the first letter in your "Search Word". If your word in the Search Word column were "Toronto," for example, you would click on "T" and then scroll down (i.e. click on the down arrow to the middle right of the Word Wheel) until you come across a word that relates to population.
  5. If you were to chose "teachers" and then click on the SEARCH button, you would get a listing, in a window entitled Full text search hits, of all articles in which the word "teachers" appears. However, only one article exists under the sub-heading The Population ("From Sod to Person #1").

  6. Complete as many other letters as possible in the remaining time for this station.
