What information is on E-STAT? Statistics Canada collects, analyzes and publishes data on almost every type of economic and social activity in Canada. To help assure accessibility to that data, Statistics Canada has created various computer-aided data retrieval packages one of which is called E-STAT. E-STAT is Statistics Canada’s Internet-based product that offers instant access to statistical data about Canada and its people. E-STAT offers students and teachers a large amount of Statistics Canada data in a convenient educational format. Note: for users who have the E-Stat CD-ROM, it will still work, but it is no longer supported or updated by Statistics Canada. The basic E-STAT encompasses 2 of our largest databases, 1. CANSIM which stands for Canadian Socio-Economic Information Management and 2. various censuses (the Colonial Census database as well as recent censuses - 1986, 1991 and 2001). Other databases also include the 1991 Aboriginal Peoples Survey, the 1991 and 2001 Census of Agriculture database, an Environment database and information on the federal Elections of 1997 or 2000. It takes approximately two years and more for new census data to be analyzed, checked and then officially released to the public. Hence, one cannot expect to get the official release of all census data from the 2001 census of the population until sometime in 2003. (Release Schedule) The revised (Fall, 2000)
E-STAT on the web (http://estat.statcan.ca) has a revamped look and is organized by topics rather than by databases.
This revised site also contains links to articles that can be found on
various topics (ex. the economy, education, social conditions). These articles
are from various Statistics Canada publications
(Canadian Social Trends, Canada Year Book, Health Report, Education
Quarterly Report, The Daily).
Teachers can also find lesson plans by grade / division and by subject
area at this site.
