COURSE EXPECTATIONS:
Upon completion of the course, teacher candidates will demonstrate a critical awareness of:
- the development of language arts and literacy with a focus on Junior/Intermediate grade levels
- contemporary approaches to teaching and learning language arts and literacy
- current classroom resources for teaching language arts and literacy in the J/I division
- new literacies and their importance in the development of current curriculum and pedagogy
- the changing nature of literacy curricula
- relevant Ontario Ministry of Education documents and resources
- inclusive and generative approaches to language arts and literacy curricula
- a broad range of contemporary children’s and young adult (YA) literature
- authentic language arts and literacy assessment practices
- professional development for literacy teacher education
