\nCourse Objectives and Content<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

In this survey<\/u> course, you can develop a broad understanding of Psychology. PSYC 1106 examines biological, cognitive, and environmental psychological explanations of people \/ creatures.<\/p>\n

In PSYC 1106 and PSYC 1107, you explore theories and findings which provide an academic foundation for various university programs in addition to Psychology-specific specializations<\/p>\n

 
\nPSYC 1106<\/strong> lectures focus on psychological theories, research methods<\/span>, neuroscience, development<\/span>, the senses, classical and operant conditioning<\/span>, personality, and psychological disorders<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

1. identify and differentiate among the foundational theories of psychology,<\/p>\n

2. recognise core psychological findings,<\/p>\n

3. contrast psychological explanations of human and animal behaviour, and<\/p>\n

4. derive real-world implications of the psychological theories and findings.<\/p>\n

 
\nBasic Workload Expectations for Success<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Attend to every lecture with focus and attention, make<\/strong> and review<\/strong> your lectures, complete the readings, and regularly <\/strong>self-test<\/strong> your recall and understanding of the material.<\/p>\n

A general estimate is that these learning activities will require 3 hours per week <\/strong>outside of attending to the lectures. <\/strong>In addition to these basic learning activities, completing <\/strong>the course assignments <\/strong>will enhance <\/strong>your learning<\/strong> and success.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Success requires sustained effort and focused work. Being brilliant may make success easier, but brilliance is neither sufficient nor necessary! for real<\/em>

Scavenger Hunt and Open-Book Assignments<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

As soon as you have Blackboard (BB) course access, the scavenger hunt and 3 course assignments are available to you. I recommend a quick review of each. The reviews will highlight the types of content covered in the lectures and the types of exam questions asked. I also recommend that you complete each assignment section-by-section as you encounter\/review the relevant course materials.<\/p>\n

The due dates<\/strong> do not represent when you start<\/em>; they represent when you need to be finished<\/em><\/strong>. After the due date, you will no longer have access to the assignment. Work<\/strong> on the open-book assignments gradually<\/strong> over time. Enter<\/strong> and Save<\/strong> your answers as you work on the questions for specific topics. But do not Submit<\/strong> your answers until<\/strong> all<\/strong> of the questions are complete<\/strong> because undoing premature submissions is problematic. With appropriate effort and attention to detail, you should score well and be better prepared for the course and each exam.

\n3 Open-Book Assignments<\/u><\/strong> 
\nThe assignments encourage you to review the lecture materials in a timely manner. Each assignment includes questions which demonstrate the type of understanding and content assessed in each exam.
\n 
\nOnline Class Only: 1 Secure Testing System Verifications<\/u><\/strong> (1%)
\nFollow the lockdown browser (LDB) software installation instructions, and read (+see my demo) and follow the environmental scanning instructions. Complete the appropriate “system test” and a proper environmental scan to earn your 1%. The correctness of your answers is irrelevant.

\n\"Exams\"
\nExams<\/u><\/strong> (require detailed content knowledge and a clear understanding of content implications)<\/p>\n

1. You are expected to be available for<\/strong> each of the scheduled exams<\/strong>.
\n <\/p>\n

2. Given the large class size, there are minimal opportunities<\/strong> for questions during<\/strong> the exams<\/strong>. There is space to write comments about specific test items. When I review the test results and your comments, if needed, I will adjust the scoring and\/or eliminate problematic items.
\n <\/p>\n

3. Midterm I<\/strong> is worth 15% and Midterm<\/strong> II<\/strong> is worth 20%.<\/p>\n

3.1 The Midterm questions will focus on all<\/strong> course content (readings, lectures, videos, etc.) covered up to the date<\/strong> of the test. The date<\/strong> of each Midterm is identified in the schedule <\/strong>below.<\/p>\n

3.2 Once you start<\/strong>, you will have 65\/75 minutes<\/strong> for Midterm 1\/2, respectively. [For SAS registered students, your test time will be assigned appropriately.] Please read<\/strong> and think about <\/strong>the questions carefully<\/strong>. Most people finish well under the time limit.
\n <\/p>\n

4. If uncontrolled circumstances<\/strong> cause you to miss a Midterm, please contact me as soon as possible. If you have provided me with a legitimate reason<\/u> for missing and<\/u> not too much time has passed, we will arrange a make-up exam. If too much<\/span> time has passed, no make-up exam is possible. But, with sufficient justification, I will transfer the value of your missed Midterm (15% or 20%) to the value of your Final exam (\u2191 by 15% or 20%).
\n <\/p>\n

5. The Final Exam<\/strong> is worth 30% of your final grade. The questions will focus on all<\/strong> content covered throughout the course. *The University Registrar\u2019s Office<\/strong> determines the Date <\/strong>and Time <\/strong>for the Final Exam<\/strong>. They provide you with this date-time information directly. You are expected to be available<\/em>.
\n <\/p>\n

Grading and Grade Postings<\/u><\/strong>

\nFor each assignment and exam, I review the item results for potential problems. If needed, I will re-score or adjust the scoring. I post your grades in BB Grade Centre. If you believe that there is a mistake in one of your grades, please contact me.<\/p>\n

In the relevant discussion-board thread, I post class-level scoring results to give you a broader view of student-performance patterns for each assignment \/ exam.

For basic course information<\/strong>, the course BB website includes the Syllabus, Readings, Lecture materials, Assignments, and other resources.<\/p>\n

This allows other students to hear or see your question, participate in the discussion, and hear or see my response. If you are confused about something, other students also are very likely confused. So, I definitely want and need to know!<\/p>\n

In this class, the maximum number of bonus credits you can earn is 3%. The credit will be added to your final grade at the end of the term. See the syllabus for the completion deadline.

\nOption 1: Participate in research <\/u><\/strong>\"SONA\"
\nYou may volunteer to participate in Nipissing University research projects listed in the SONA system. Each SONA study will describe what you will be doing and how many credits you will earn. Generally, longer research participation time gives you more SONA credits and more course bonus points. For example, 1 hour of research = 1 credit which represents a 1% bonus in this course. Research studies are accessed via an online system called SONA. To use this system, you first must enroll. Follow this link for details and instructions<\/span><\/a>.
\nFYI: After classes end, the SONA administrator sends me a list of student names with SONA credits.<\/p>\n
